"It's because I'm useless. For me, it's easier. You can't make me do anything if I curl into a ball. The more they hurt me, the more I curled. It's like being a snail, I suppose." He hid when he got scared, he got worse under pressure and lost his ability to handle himself and his powers.
He took a sip of the wine and then slowly sat himself down on the floor, looking up at Barty. "You're strong. You learned, you bided your time, you knew what you were doing. Even when you didn't, you kinda did." Barty was his the brave one, after all. Always protecting him. "You were my hero. I was dead weight."
"That's not true. You were the only-- You felt real. You weren't scared of me." The only one to touch him for reasons other than to drug him or treat him or otherwise experiment on him. The only one to be around him without headphones or with Barty being unable to speak. He held a hand out for the bottle now, looking down at Klaus. "I'm not strong. Sometimes you just don't have a choice. Just wait for the right opportunity. And I wanted you safe."
"You choose to be strong, even when you're not. It makes you strong." Klaus raised his other hand instead and grabbed Barty's wrist, yanking him until he came down to sit with him. He waited for Barty to sit before he passed him the bottle, smiling. "You're strong, Bar-Bar. Always have been. Trust me, I know you better than myself."
He giggled a little at that and then shuffled forward, reaching out to take one of Barty's hands in his own. "You know... I really don't like wine much."
"Yeah, I prefer whiskey. They've got some upstairs." Barty held on to Klaus's hand, looking at him and reaching up again, so he could play with his hair. "Stay with me. I won't make you. Not really. But I'll give you anything you ask for."
He should have probably added some modifiers, but he didn't want to. he was ready to give him the world. "Whatever you want."
"Let's just spend this time together, yeah? Me and you. Just us. Don't worry so much. Get out of your head and stay in the moment. With me." He held Barty's hand, not sure what Barty wanted from him but he wasn't exactly going to walk away from him, was he? It was Barty, after all. Even if he roamed, he could never leave him. He loved him too much.
"I'm here, now. We're together, handsome." He nuzzled against Barty's hand and then looked at him. "Smile for me? I smiled for you."
"Easier when you have to do it, isn't it? Smiling." Barty sighed, but then he chuckled. He let go of Klaus's hand, but only so he could grab him by the hips instead and quite suddenly pull him on top of him. While Klaus was straddling him, he leaned his head back and smiled. Close enough to it, anyway. "I'll be yours, darling. If you'll be mine."
"See, this is the romance I talked about before. You are taking notes!" Klaus laughed and planted a kiss on Barty's cheek playfully. Hugging him again was like a surge of a thousand memories. How many times did they hug like this? How many fun little moments in terrible times? It was addictive.
"Darling, I'll be yours until the end of time. Just don't forget to be mine."
