"Is he the one that melted down over the sweet in his bed?" Jon asked as he lit himself up a cigarette and purposefully blew his smoke away from Barty. He wasn't a big fan of smoke and he was a posh lad, Jon liked to be a bit careful around him. He was a good one, he wasn't going to chase him off. "The more the merrier. I'm gonna make a can from your Giac so more should be there to see it."
He kept telling Barty that he would crack Giacomo and get him to talk one day but so far, it was mostly just a game. Though he did think their Anna would finally get him good this time. "You like him, eh? As a mate or ..."
"I don't know. I think maybe more than that. Different, anyway." A strange category that Sam had somehow fallen into without Barty intending it. "Originally I just found him irritating, if entertaining." Always fussing around, always mumbling as he talked to himself, usually agitated about something and always so very straight. Well. In some senses of the word. "I think he fancies me. It always muddles the waters a little when someone fancies you."
Feelings in there, real feelings. Made it all more difficult to deal with. "Giac likes annoying him, so now I end up in the middle sometimes. Still irritating."
"Crushes are a weird thing. They're like a match. Love is the fucking thing that lights it all up. Then you're just burning everything around you." Or, at least, that was how Jon experienced love. "He can come down then but we won't be very to the rules, hope your prefect boy can cope." He assumed it was the prefect, he had heard all about his roommate before and unless he changed, he was still that same one. Picky, awkward guy.
"I can't wait to see where this party is gonna go." Jon came over to Barty and looked out from the window, frowning. "I'm hoping Alfie doesn't bring anything stronger than a good drink but just... watch yourself if you're picky about your substances."
"Alfie's gonna bring stronger stuff than that, you know that. Just make sure he won't make Holden take it." Alfie had an interesting relationship with all of his siblings, wanting them safe and loving them fiercely, but also enjoying leading them very wrong paths entirely too much. "I got Sam to agree to come because I hinted at a fun Dublin boy being here."
Jealousy was a fun tool to use, if used right. Dangerous too. Both things he had learned from simply being near Jonathan and Edward. What a pair they made. "Is he coming down? Ed, I mean." He wasn't actually sure, he just found it a useful insinuation to make.
"Oh yeah, his highness himself is taking the 51A all the way down to our lowly little bogman shanty town." Jonathan mocked playfully. He found it funny that to most, Edward was seen as fancy. Then again, Edward was 16 and more fashionable than most he'd seen so he wasn't really shocked. He was a handsome fucker too. "Everyone's dying of excitement."
He was pretty eager to see Ed again, honestly. He pushed the window open so the snoke could drift away and turned back to Barty. "Is your lad jealous or just eager to chat up a Dublin lad cause I gotta warn him, Edward's never what anyone expects."
As Jon took another puff, his eyed up Holden down the other side of the caravan. Yeah, him and Axel were coming nowhere near Alfie this weekend.
"I'm pretty sure he's jealous. I don't know, I'm still feeling it out." With a frown, he tried to find the best way to explain it. "I've never really thought about it that much. Falling in love. What it's like being in love. I'm not sure if this is it, but it's hard to predict so far. Kind of exciting."
That fire Jon talked about, he wasn't sure whether he was there just yet, but he was beginning to understand it a little. "Edward's a lot more than anyone could reasonably expect. And he likes to play. He's better with emotions than you and I."
"He's not better, he's just on another side of a spectrum. We keep ours guarded, we're shit at expressing it but him? He explodes it all over everyone. It's not great either. The perfect balance is hard to find, not sure it exists. You either think too much and feel too little, like us sods, or you feel too much and forget to think." He loved Edward, he truly did, but he was also an annoying prat that made everything about himself and eternally chased certain emotions because he was addicted to the feeling. Jon didn't think that made him better.
"I'm not sure we're doing it right but Edward certain ain't." Jon stubbed out his cigarette and tossed the butt out of the window. Then he gestured at his brother, diligently plugging away. "I think my wee Holden is doing it all pretty solid. Course, he's a wee one so it's easier but he tells me all about how to feel. I think he's my cricket."
"I don't think he's any good at feeling his feelings in a productive way, but he's a lot better at manipulating them." He had certainly seen it plenty of times already with Jonathan. Barty supposed it said a lot about him that this was how he chose to approach being good at emotions. Good at using them against people.
Maybe his father had some point when it came to his opinion of him after all. Good luck to Sam. He snorted at his own thoughts and then glanced at Holden before looking at Jon again. "You are just soft for him. It's sweet. I reckon I've got that with Giac, in a way." They were twins, but still. "You might be a wee biased about the lad though."
"To a point. Then it comes crashing down. Trust me, you can't manipulate emotions without it giving at some point." Sure, maybe Edward used emotions to play with him but it never lasted and, judging by Edward reacted, it never went how he wanted it to go in the end.
"Nah, he's smart. Trust me, he's gonna go to uni and everything. I know it. He's gonna do my books for me. For a while, I reckon. Then he'll leave us, find someone, have some kids and live happily. And they say a life well lived in the smartest way to live." So Jon didn't begrudge him, he saw him as a clever boy who deserved it. "I get it. With Giac. You get protective of them. The kids. And it doesn't get easier as they age. Bet you thought you'd worry less by now, with your Giac."
"Giac's got no survival instincts and he loves thrills. He likes showing off too." Barty knew that to everyone else it sounded as if he made up Giacomo's personality, but he knew his brother. "I think he'll like gambling when he discovers it, like your Alfie does." He'd have to remember to keep those two apart.
"And I don't really know where it's going to lead, the thing he has with girls." He was staring a lot. Barty could imagine all too well what he was thinking. He was a pretty randy lad himself, but Giac had absolutely no impulse control. He had his face though and Barty did know how much cache that alone could have. Danger in the making. "Giac's gonna get worse."
"I agree. I think a life of repression breeds an addict as much as a life without rules." And Giac was repressed but not in the traditional way. His repression was active self repression. All personality was kept inside. It would all come exploding out one day, Jon 100% believed Barty on that.
"I think he'll be unstoppable. If all you said is true, and I believe you, it's a big storm that's coming." And that was the worst part - when siblings went nuts and no one could control them. "It won't be as bad as my Alfie. Nothing is."
"Alfie's had all the expectations on him. Future leader and all that. But he knew he wasn't cut out for it. I wonder if it's a blessing that he saw you'd be the one or whether that was the curse." Kind of hard to tell, really. Put a lot on Jonathan, that much was for sure. "I think I'll be all right for as long as Giac respects me. No idea what will happen after."
And that scared him for Giac's sake. "Well. I see we are cheerful as ever. All I really want is to come here this weekend and snog my boy by the campfire."
"We ain't the sort. Everything is difficult. We might be miserable sods but we got a lot on us. You got your Giac, I got my lot. Alfie's pissing money away, Holden is freezing half to death as he studies and Axel is sick. You ever had a sick toddler? Jesus, I nearly blew me top." It wasn't that Axel meant to be a pest but he did spent most of Tuesday sobbing at the top of his voice and Jon had definite limitations. "I dunno what to do with a kid that age neither. I gave him a nip of brandy today."
Seemed to work about the same as a painkiller, the lad was out cold in his bed so hey. Jonathan leaned forward and slapped Barty on the arm. "This Saturday, just come and think of relaxing, don't get in your head. Snog your lad, yeah?"
"I'm planning on it." Barty grinned, partially because he was imagining Sam's face if he knew that he talked about him like that. Rather torn, he imagined. Conflicted. Luckily, that was one of his most attractive expressions. "Hope wee Axel feels better soon."
Maybe he would, if he slept it all off.
Barty got up and gave Jon a nod. "I'll see you Saturday. We can have fun with our boys." One way or another, he was sure.
